In the early 1990s, firefighting foam containing PFAS — also known as "forever chemicals" — leaked into the area around Jersey Airport’s fire training ground. These chemicals, which are incredibly slow to break down, have since been detected in local drinking water.

Although the use of PFAS-containing foam was stopped in 1993, the long-term impact is still being felt. Research shows that PFAS can build up in the body over time, and even small amounts are now found in most people’s blood. For those exposed to higher levels, studies suggest potential links to serious health conditions, including elevated cholesterol, kidney and testicular cancers.

In response, Jersey’s government created a PFAS Scientific Advisory Panel, which has recommended therapeutic phlebotomy — a procedure to remove blood — to help reduce PFAS levels in affected individuals.

Many residents believe PFAS contamination has impacted their health. While long-term solutions are being explored, the need for clean water, free of forever chemicals is more important than ever.
