Before We Get Down to the Recipes, lets Take a Look at Why it’s so Important to Stay Hydrated this Spring:
- Hydration boosts your immune system and flushes out toxins. If your body is properly hydrated it will restore nutrients quicker, consequently preventing illnesses. Indeed, it is a good idea to keep your body as fighting fit as possible as the threat of Covid-19 remains worldwide.
- Water lubricates our joints. Cartilage found in joints and the disks of the spine, contains around 80% water. Long-term dehydration can reduce the joints’ shock-absorbing ability, leading to joint pain.
- Hydration regulates body temperature. Water that is stored in the middle layers of the skin comes to the skin’s surface as sweat when the body heats up. As it evaporates, it cools the body. If you don’t drink enough water, you will lose too much when you sweat and become dehydrated!
- The digestive system depends on water. The bowel needs water to work properly. Dehydration can lead to digestive problems, constipation, and an overly acidic stomach. This increases the risk of heartburn and stomach ulcers.
- Drinking water helps maintain blood pressure. A lack of water can cause blood to become thicker, increasing blood pressure.
- Effective hydration can prevent kidney damage. The kidneys regulate fluid in the body. Insufficient water can lead to kidney stones and other problems.
- Water cushions the brain, spinal cord, and other sensitive tissues. Dehydration can affect brain structure and function. It is also involved in the production of hormones and neurotransmitters. Prolonged dehydration can lead to problems with thinking and reasoning.
- Being sufficiently hydrated can make you feel more energised and more focused.
- Hydration also improves cognition and mood!
- Being well-hydrated improves sleep quality, so to cultivate better mental health, you must be drinking enough water!
Culligan ZeroWater’s Spring Hydration Hacks!
At Culligan ZeroWater we know it is hard to remember to drink enough water when having fun in the sun. If you struggle to drink enough water, we suggest you follow these handy hacks and tips:
- If you don’t like the taste of plain water, try adding a slice of lemon or lime to your water. This will improve the taste so you will be more likely to drink more water! Drinking lemon water before and during meals will leave you feeling healthy and full. It also helps clear up your skin! We have more elaborate and delicious infused water recipes below if you want to get creative and try lots of different flavours.
- If you are drinking alcohol at a picnic or bbq this spring make sure that you drink some water alongside it, as alcohol will dehydrate you further.
- Sugary drinks such as Cola, Sprite, Fanta will not keep you hydrated. Walter Willett, professor of nutrition at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health stated in a 2017 CNN article that we are “we are mal-hydrated, because we drink so much soda and fruit juice and other sugar-sweetened beverages…we drink beverages that harm our health.” So instead of a Cola reach for some water instead when enjoying your time in the sun.
- Drink water consistently throughout the day – it’s easy to forget to do so when relaxing out in the sun but its super important!
- If you have trouble remembering to drink water, drink on a schedule. Drink water when you wake up, at breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and when you go to bed. Alternatively, you could drink a small glass of water at the beginning of each hour.
- Culligan ZeroWater’s useful and affordable water filters means that drinking filtered, pure tasting water has never been easier and cheaper. You won’t have to keep forking out for expensive single use plastic bottles that damage the environment, and you’ll will be able to stay hydrated!
