How and When To Replace My Water Filter in My Culligan ZeroWater Water Filter Jug?
Nov 12, 2024
You've decided to buy a Culligan ZeroWater water filter jug, good choice; not only does it ensure that you drink water that is pure and healthy, but it will also go a long way in improving your sustainability efforts. However, now you've had it a couple of months and are wondering when to replace your Zerowater filter and how to do it.
Each water jug comes with a filter installed. However, over time, because it is stripping impurities from the water, the filter becomes less efficient and needs to be replaced with a new filter. So you need to change it at frequent intervals.
In this blog, we share when you should change the filter and how to do it.
Four Ways To Tell When To Change Your Zerowater Filter
- It is important that you periodically test your filtered water with your water quality meter and when the meter reads 006 or higher the filter should be replaced: All Culligan ZeroWater jugs and dispensers come with a FREE TDS meter, so you can use this to monitor the effectiveness of the filter to know when to change your Zerowater filter. - If you notice that the taste of your water has changed: A change in taste means that impurities are getting through the water filter, when the filtered water tastes acidic or fishy the filter has reached the point of exhaustion and must be replaced.
- If you notice impurities in your water: Impurities in the water mean that the filter in your jug is clogged and the impurities are not being stripped. You may notice sedimentation once the water settles in a glass. Often the contaminants might also be floating around in your water. If you spot anything in your water after pouring from your filter jug, it is time to replace the filter.
- If the flow of water from your jug slows down: Culligan ZeroWater filtration will be slower than conventional 2-stage filters because our 5-stage filtration works much harder to remove more contaminants. However, our standard flow rate is 195ml per minute, if this slows down your filter needs changing.
Experienced users of our water filter jugs will tell you that sometimes you don't have to change the filter according to the manufacturer's instructions. This is true because there are a number of factors that impact when a filter needs to be replaced. You can look at these additional factors before you change the filter and decide if your filter needs replacing now or not.
Additional Factors For When To Change Your Zerowater Filter
While the above are signs that you need to change the water filter in your jug, the following will impact the frequency of replacements. So, these are important to think about too.
Quantity of Water Filtered
The first factor is determined by how much water you need to filter every day. If you use your Culligan ZeroWater jug more than a few times a day it means that you filter a large volume of water and the filter will therefore need to trap more impurities each day.
Types of Impurities
The type and amounts of impurities in your water also matter. Impurities vary by region and water source, for example if your water has a high level of total dissolved solids your filter will need changing more regularly.
Keeping On Top Of Filter Changes
If you are a busy individual who cannot keep track of when you should change your filter it is best to have a reminder saved on your phone or marked on a calendar.
The easiest way, however, is to use the free TDS meter that comes with all of our jugs. The metre displays the amount of dissolved solids in the water. So, when the filter is fully used up the metre will indicate this by displaying a higher number (and by that, we mean anything above 006). It is an unmistakable sign that you should change your filter.
For even more convenience, shop our ready-read range, each has a built-in TDS meter so you can get a real-time read of your filter’s efficacy as the water passes through it.
Why Is It Important To Replace My Water Filter Promptly?
Replacing your Zerowater filter in a timely manner is important for a number of reasons. When a water filter reaches capacity, it stops working as effectively, which causes several issues:
- Clogging and reducing flow: Filters clog up with contaminants that they capture, which reduces the water flow and puts pressure on the filtration system.
- Bacteria growth: Saturated filters can harbour bacteria because the moisture and captured debris create the perfect environment for them to grow. This is then released into your drinking water.
- Reduced filtration efficiency: As the filter fills with impurities, it becomes less effective and eventually stops filtering altogether meaning you will be drinking regular tap water.
- Release trapped contaminants: Filters capture particles like dirt, chemicals and even pesticides. As they reach filtration capacity there is a risk that these trapped contaminants will leach into your water.
Effectively, if you don’t replace your Zerowater filter when you notice that it needs changing, you are likely to start drinking unfiltered water again because the filter will stop removing the impurities.
