NHS Recommendations: What to Drink and When

According to the NHS website, "Water is a healthy and cheap choice for quenching your thirst at any time. It has no calories and contains no sugars that can damage teeth. Plain tea, fruit tea and coffee (without added sugar) can also be healthy. If you don't like the taste of plain water, try sparkling water or add a slice of lemon or lime. Or heat the water and infuse a tea bag, some coffee or a slice of lemon. You could also add some no-added-sugar squash or fruit juice for flavor." The question, of course, is how much water you should drink daily. Back in the 90's the accepted knowledge was that one should drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. Today, however, this view has been challenged with some experts saying that there is no benefit to drinking exactly 8 glasses of water a day - most people will be properly hydrated with anything between 6 and 8 glasses. The bottom line is we should all drink enough water to stay hydrated because it has obvious health benefits. The first is that water keeps you mentally and physically alert. When you are dehydrated your brain and body don't function as well - you will feel sluggish and you will not be able to think clearly. Water also helps with constipation, which is quite a common problem. If you don't have regular bowel movements try drinking more water during the day.

Water, it has been shown, can reduce and even cure the common headache. Headaches can sometimes occur because blood vessels in the brain are overly constricted and you can relax them by drinking water. The NHS also has other recommendations on what you should be drinking.

Alternatives:

  • Milk comes highly recommended as it contains calcium, which is good for your bones, as well as plenty of other minerals. Children should not be given cow's milk until they turn one, but after that they should be encouraged to drink at least one or two glasses a day.
  • They also recommend that you drink 5 servings of unsweetened juices and smoothies a day, as this makes up the recommended portion of fruit and vegetables. Avoid sweeteners because not only do they lead to dental decay, they also lead to weight gain. Fizzy drinks like soda contain too much sugar and should be avoided as well.

We recommend a water filter jug from Culligan ZeroWater to keep yourself and your family sufficiently hydrated.. A water filter jug is a cheaper way to ensure that you all get pure drinking water When you are shopping for a water filter jug make sure that you buy a brand that actually works - the market is flooded with many that don't and if you end up with one of these you will end up drinking impure water. One way to do this is to test the water that it purifies - ask the vendor or retailer to demonstrate it or perform a test before you make the decision to buy. I.e. poor a glass of red wine through the water filter jug and make sure the end result is clean and pure water. Lastly, make sure that it is a filter that is built to last.

The best advise we can give you is today is to buy a water filter jug from us or any reputed source or retailer stocking Culligan ZeroWater water filter jugs.
